A few months ago, the doors of a flat in historic central Mons opened onto desolation. After major water damage a year earlier with no follow-up, the home was partly hit by aggressive mould and stagnant damp. The owner, discouraged by the scale, had given up recovering anything.
Our mission was not just binning used furniture, but sanitising a space heavily marked by neglect and weather.
The real challenge: biological risk and health urgency
Gloves alone no longer suffice: plasterboard detaching under damp, an acrid musty smell making air unbreathable without respiratory protection, a wooden floor threatening to give way under waterlogged boxes along the partitions.
⚠️ Never stir air without fixing spores
Handling mouldy materials without prior fungicidal spraying spreads spores and allergens through the whole building. Decontamination always comes before removal.
Our approach on site
- Safety and preventive decontamination: FFP3 masks and surface fungicide spraying to fix spores before any handling.
- Sealed-batch removal: water-destroyed furniture and papers hermetically packed inside the rooms, to avoid contaminating common areas.
- Structural survey: progressive floor clearance for a building expert to validate slab integrity before renovation.

The result
In two days of intensive, rigorous work, the Mons flat freed itself of damp and rubbish. The owner could finally breathe, recover a healthy space and hand keys to a general renovation firm. A hard clearance, but rewarding when it saves a property from total ruin.
