Namur: what a family attic hides after forty years forgotten

A year ago, opening a skylight in an attic under the Namur roofs, the smell of old wood and settled dust immediately reminded me why our trade is no linear science. The heirs, facing that dark room full of leather trunks and boxes stacked since 1985, literally no longer knew where to start. Between nostalgia and the urgency of selling the family building, the blockage was total.

Rather than attacking with brute emptying, our intervention played out on method and respect for long time.

The real challenge: selective sorting under the eaves

The classic trap is piling everything in the middle to make room, creating even greater chaos. Here the cramped chute-stair access banned heavy machinery: every piece had to be dismantled by hand to come down without scratching the period stair mouldings, and grandfather's old papers and science magazines alone meant hundreds of kilos in sealed bags.

Our approach on site

1. Buffer sorting zone: neighbouring room turned into a clean decanting space to instantly separate revaluation, recycling and the family keepsake box.
2. Millimetre removal: team relay carrying from the top floor to the street-parked vehicle, strictly respecting the Namur neighbourhood's quiet.
3. Final clean: full dusting of exposed joists and technical sweeping for healthy attics, ready for insulation or conversion by future buyers.

The result

In two full days, that stifling attic regained its daylight and original volumes. The children left with the best of their carefully sorted family history, and the house could start its new property chapter. A successful clearance is above all a space that breathes again.
